Gay Number Plate BanAfter much debate the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has withdrawn a Personalised Number Plate deemed to be offensive to the gay community. The number plate H8 GAY that looks similar to “hate gay” was reported to the DVLA by a member of the public who had seen it on a vehicle in Notting Hill, London.
Initially the DVLA refused to recall the personalised number plate as it did not contravene guidelines that govern the removal of number plates on the grounds of political, racial or religious sensitivities. This decision has now been reversed by the DVLA after the intervention of Labour MP Chris Bryant and the personalised number plate has been withdrawn from public use.
The plate in question was owned by a gay couple, who it is understood bought the personalised number plate for a joke as a birthday present. Personalised Number Plate News: 04-05-2006 |
