Information to help when buying a Private/Cherished number plate.
When buying a Private/Cherished number plate, if it is your first time and you are unsure of the procedure, first of all have a look around and find the number plate that you want, when you have done this, Private/Cherished number plates are either supplied on a Certificate of Entitlement (V750 DVLA Form), a Retention document (V778 DVLA Form) or you can do a car to car transfer by using a (V317 DVLA Form).
It usually takes a few weeks for the transfer to go through, once you have purchased your chosen number plate. Most number plate dealers will do the transfer for you so you don't have to worry about the paper work yourself. Also most dealers will supply you with a set of number plates (At various costs) to put on your vehicle so you are able receive the paper work and the actual number plates at the same time, which is great if you are buying the number plate as a present.
